Southside High School, Selma, Alabama

2003 Composite Profile:

Prepared:  June, 2003

This is a composite profile based on the data taken from those that responded to the Personal Data Questionnaire in June, 2003.  This sampling may or may not fully represent The Friends and Class of 1975… nevertheless, it is provided as the best we could do with the data available at the time.  Although not fully scientific in our approach, we still feel the analysis is meaningful and fun to read…A total of 27 people responded to the questionnaire.

Y MARRIAGE:  81.5%, or 22 of the 27 classmates surveyed have been or are currently married.   Of those married, the number of years range from 5 to 28, with almost two-thirds having been married for 20 years or more.  The overall average number of years married is 19.8 years.  Three reported as being divorced and not currently married at time of this report.

CHILDREN:  Better than three-fourths of us have children (including step children).  We average 2.25 children per household, with the most being 5 and the least being 1 per household, although the most recurring number per household is 2.

b GRANDCHILDREN:  20% of us have grandchildren at the moment.  Of the graduates with grandchildren, the average number is 1.8.

G EDUCATION & TRAINING:  Over 60% of us attended a post-high school college/university or trade school program at some time since leaving high school.  Half of those completed a Bachelors Degree (about a third of us overall) and 1 out of every 5 of us have completed an advanced academic degree (Masters Degree or PhD).

H WHERE WE LIVE:  Almost half of us still live somewhere in Alabama, while almost two-thirds live either in Alabama or a bordering state (Note that when referring to outside of the state of Alabama, Florida and Georgia are the most popular).

- E-MAIL:  Most people, almost 90% are “electronically connected” with an e-mail address.  Some have a personal e-mail address…others have one for work…some have both.

?   FAVORITE TEACHER:  16 different teachers were named when you were asked who your favorite teacher was.  Several of you listed more than one teacher.  The #1 favorite teacher is Mr. Bill Minor (Coach Minor to some of us).  Second place goes to Mr. Ollis Grayson.  I should note that it just so happens that both of these gentlemen have seats on the Dallas County Board of Education.  Third place goes to Mr. Waller while Mr. Nichols and Mrs. Peoples both received honorable mention.  Also please note that Mr. Waller is currently the Assistant Superintendent for the Dallas County School System.  Here are some of the other names that were submitted (not in any particular order):  Barton, Fields, B. Strickland, Abbott, Hollingsworth, Campbell, Lem Jones, Lucky, Peters.

Ź  FAVORITE MEMORY:  Just like the Favorite Teacher category above, there were many submissions.  The #1 favorite memory is band and the #2 favorite memory is playing baseball and football.  Senior Skip Day and Cheering both tied for third place.  And here are the rest of the top submissions:  football games, graduation, International Relations, Senior Trip.

& MILITARY SERVICE:  Five of the 27 polled said they served in the military (Note:  does not include non-Southside spouses that may have served), while two served to pensioned retirement.

Q BUSINESS OWNERSHIP:  One in ten of us own and operate a small business.
